Nils Novas Werke und Installationen sind ständig bestrebt, Zeitwahrnehmungen und räumliche Gewissheiten aufzulösen. Sie nehmen eine starke Position im heutigen Schweizer Kunstspektrum ein. Novas neues Künstlerbuch Memory Confronted kommt als «altmodisches» Fotoalbum daher und beinhaltet digital gedruckte Fotografien, die in ihrer Kombination und Abfolge einer Ausstellung ähneln. Gegenüberstellungen von Prominentenportraits mit jenen ähnlicher, aber unbekannter Menschen verweisen auf die Macht der Inszenierung als Werkzeug zur Darstellung bestimmter Eigenschaften. Fotografierte Zeitungsausschnitte, kombiniert mit Bildern der «realen» Welt, fragen nach der Realität hinter dem Medium und verschmelzen unterschiedliche Identitäten im Kopf des Betrachters zu einer neuen. Symmetrische Räume täuschen Spiegelungen vor, und in Abbildungen von tatsächlichen Raum- und Objektspiegelungen wetteifern die «originale» und die gespiegelte Seite um Glaubwürdigkeit und Authentizität. Auch der Bildschirm wird zum Spiegel und verbindet den Raum des Betrachters mit dem medialen Bild.
Nils Nova führt uns mit der Collage in diesem bibliophilen «Fotoalbum» virtuos aufs Glatteis, indem er das eigentlich Unbestimmte unserer Empfindung zu lenken weiss.

Nils Nova’s works and installations are rooted in the desire to subvert our perception of time and our assumptions about space. His artist’s book «Memory Confronted» is conceived as a photo album; it contains prints of photographs, lined up and combined as in an exhibition. Nova demonstrates the power of staging by juxtaposing portraits of celebrities with those of ordinary people who resemble them; photographed newspaper clippings combined with pictures of the «real» world question the reality behind the medium, and the fusion of different identities creates new realities in the viewer’s mind. Nova’s collages in this bibliophile «photo album» are brilliantly deceptive, exploiting and manipulating the uncertainty of perception.
